The history

Around Odense was some small villages. One of these villages is Hunderup, which is known from the 1100th, for being bestowed upon Dalum Kloster by King Knud VI. At the reformation in 1536, Hunderup came under the kingdom, and was made to a cavalry estate, and functioned like this until 1765, when Hunderups farmers got independent, by bying their own copyholds from the king.

A lot changed during the big 1833 fire, where 6 farms was ruined to ashes. After this the village started with spreading and parcellation. In 1907 the village from incorporated to Odense, and became a urban district. One of the village farms was in the Knudsens family ownership, for many generations. In 1927 the parcellation of the farms fields had begun, and in 1954 the buildings was transferred to A/S De Knudsenske Grunde, og was furnished to Motel Odense - Hotel Knudsens Gaard, inaugurated in 1955. The high amount of visitors the hotel has had through the years, by danish as well as foreign guest, is evidence that many wants to be surrounded by environment. The old Knudsens gaard still has this, despite radical modernizations, and now everything seems a great unison of style and picturesque charm.

BEST WESTERN Hotel Knudsens Gaard has been owned by Sinne and Steen Sørensen since 1987, who also is behind the famous Hotel Hesselet in Nyborg.
